Old Rag Mountain – Shenandoah National Park

Old Rag Mountain

Distance: 8.8 miles
Pets: Not on the ridge
Difficulty: Difficult

Old Rag Mountain is an extremely popular hiking trail located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Shenandoah National Park. It is in Virginia’s Madison County about two hours from downtown Washington, DC. Old Rag has a summit elevation of 3,291 feet.

This can be a dangerous hike and is not recommended for pets. There are large boulders that one has to climb over, tight nooks to squeeze through and ledges that you have to get uneasily close too. But if one is prepared, this can be a fantastic and thrilling hike.

Unfortunately, my pictures are limited with this hike. It was difficult to carry the large camera around while trying to stumble up and down large rock formations. Also about half way through, we stumbled upon a medium sized black bear and had to be alert to where he was at all times. We ultimately decided to give him his space and we turned around and headed back the way we came.
