Sky Meadows State Park is a park located in Virginia about a hour outside of Washington, DC. It is a 1,862-acre park located in Fauquier County, Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The park was formed in 1975 and has expanded twice since. It is well known for including a portion of the Appalachian Trail.
There is over sixteen miles of hiking trails at this park. Three of the miles are part of the Appalachian Trail. For the path that we hiked, we did Gap Run to North Ridge to Appalachian Trail to Ambassador Whitehouse to Piedmont Overlook. If you plan on hiking North Ridge, you better be ready to sweat. It is a short distance but it is a grueling uphill hike. I consider myself in great shape and I was dripping sweat by the time we reached the Appalachian Trail.
One of the coolest things about this hike is the connection to the Appalachian Trail. It gives you the opportunity to hike a part of the Appalachian Trail (only 2.43 miles of the 2,200 miles). When we went, we were able to meet and talk to some of the through hikers that were resting. A great experience!
